WP 2a - Spatio-Temporal Dynamics of Coastal Urbanization and Urban Land-use Change in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA), Ghana.
Work Package 2a of the WaterPower project focuses on the spatio-temporal dynamics of changing urban land-use within the coastal areas and peri-urban fringes of the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) from the perspective of urbanization processes. More specifically, the study (in progress) will map and analyse the observed and possible future spatio-temporal trajectories (patterns, forms and trends) of urban land change, new urban forms, urban settlement and housing distribution types; and ascertain the trade-offs and linkages between land change processes across multiple distal places from urbanization perspective.
Despite the growing importance of urbanization and urban land-use change as a defining trends in the 21st century, there is lack of some critical information and data about significant trends and patterns in terms of intra-country or intra-city variations of urban population distribution, how and where urban areas are growing- the location of new urban areas, or changes in urban spatial patterns and configurations.
In the actual case of Accra, Work package 2a will attempt to fill the knowledge gap.
The overarching research question underpinning the study and guiding the development of the analytical and conceptual framework is: How does the concrete spatial organization of coastal and peri urban change evolve in Accra, with specific focus on observed patterns and possible future spatio-temporal trajectories of urbanization-driven land-use change?
To address this question, the study integrates the application of geo-information technology (RS and GIS: historic spatial and attribute data, satellite image data processing and analysis, spatial and/or landscape metrics analysis and segmentation algorithm). These methods are collectively adopted as useful point of departure to develop other relevant methods and metrics that that can allow for a full geographic (spatial) and temporal accounting of dynamics of urban land use change driven by the forces of urbanization.
