John Edem Akubia
John currently holds a position as a Doctoral Researcher with the Junior Research Group: WaterPower, Governance & Sustainability Lab, Trier University. He obtained an MPhil degree in Environmental Science and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography & Rural Development from University of Ghana (Accra) and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology (Kumasi) respectively. His doctoral thesis (in progress) under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Antje Bruns, integrates Remote Sensing, Geographic Information System and modelling techniques in studying the spatio-temporal dynamics of urbanization-driven urban land-use in coastal and peri-urban areas of the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA). He has previously conducted research on the impacts of changing climate and Land-use/cover change on water resources and socio-economic conditions in the Lower Volta basin; coastal erosion on the Keta-Anloga coastline.

Short CV |
Before joining WaterPower, John worked briefly with IUCN as Project Assistant in charge of the project “Improving livelihoods in landscapes in the Volta Basin through strengthening farmer-led approaches to ecosystem-based management” which is part of portfolio of the Water, Land and Ecosystem (WLE) Volta and Niger Focal Region (IUCN West and Central Africa Programme). He also worked previously as a Research Assistant with several research fellows from Institute of Environment and Sanitation Studies–IESS (partner institution with the WaterPower project) at university of Ghana (UG).
He was awarded an MPhil Scholarship funded by the University Of Ghana-Carnegie Next Generation of Academics in Africa Project from 2013 to 2014. His Master’s thesis under the supervision of Prof. Chris Gordon and Dr. Opoku Pabi (both in IESS) had a focus on Geo-Information Technology Application to Changing Climate and Land-Use/Cover Impacts on Water Resources and Socio-Economic Conditions in the Lower Volta Basin, Ghana. John seeks a challenging career in international research and project management. He is particularly interested in bringing a geographic perspective and an expertise in Remote Sensing, Geographic Information System and Geospatial data analysis & modelling to bear in addressing issues in cross-disciplinary research projects. |
